ABOUT US

History of the Department :

The Department of Botany was established in August 2003 in this college and the college is affiliated to University of Calcutta. During 2015, Honours course of study was introduced. The department started with fifteen general students. Presently, there are forty Honours level students and about a hundred General students. Students of the Department of Botany, come from different walks of our society representing various socioeconomic and diverse religious backgrounds. The department has adopted the methods of multi-disciplinary research as well as practical appreciation. Apart from the conventional classroom teaching method, the department very often conducts seminars and workshops to disseminate about the recent development in discourse of Botany and allied subjects. Over the years, the teaching - learning methods have been upgraded into smart classroom systems to boost up teacher student interaction.

Speciality of the Department :

The department specially focuses on the study of plant diversity in the backdrop of rich biodiversity of the adjoining areas of the college. The department plans to host a mixture of herbarium collections, preserved plant samples, medicinal plants garden, conserved database and publications - all of which will provide tremendous opportunities for students and researchers to learn about the surrounding environment of the classroom.

 

C. Seminar Organized :

A seminar was jointly organized by the Department of Botany and the Department of Zoology on vector borne diseases in the year of 2019.

 

D. Other academic programme organized :

Field work, excursions in different phyto-geographical locations and cultural activities are an integral part of the curriculum. Students of the Department regularly visit different reputed institutes and Herbarium to gain versatile knowledge of plant sciences. We visit Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden (one of the largest plant garden in India) and Central National Herbarium - CAL, West Bengal, for the academic fulfillment of the study.
