History of the department
Department of Anthropology, Ramsaday College started its journey in 2007. The journey begun not on an easy note. It started with few general students and a single faculty member. Gradually the subject became popular among the local students and the demand for the subject is increasing day by day. Honours course was introduced in the department in 2015. Initially the intake capacity for Honours students were 20. But it is increased to 40 since the academic year 2019- 2020. Beside that more than 100 students take admission every year Anthropology General course. After completion of graduation with Honours our students secure their entry in post graduate course in anthropology in different universities in West Bengal including the mother university. Our General students also enroll in post-graduation course in Anthropology through distance mode.
Speciality of the department : The teachers help the students efficient to be closer to the common people.
Seminar Organized :
1. State level seminar on 'Dalit Women and Human Rights' on 4th January, 2017, in association with Department of Political Science, Ramsaday College & financially assisted by UGC XII Plan.
2. Two Day International Webinar on 'Health Issues & Social Status of Women' on 28th & 29th September, 2020 in collaboration with Department of Anthropology, Shyampur Siddheswari Mahavidyalaya, Ajodhya,(?)Howrah & in association with IQAC, Shyampur Siddheswari Mahavidyalaya & IQAC, Ramsaday College.
Others academic programmes organized :
1. 'One Day Film Show' on 28th January 2019, by Dr. Kakali Chakrabarty, Ex-Head of Office, Eastern Regional Centre, Anthropological Survey of India, Government of India, Kolkata.
2. Special lectures on 'The horizons of Anthropology' on 29th January 2019. Lectures were delivered by Dr. Arup Ratan Bandyopadhyay, Professor in Anthropology, Department of Anthropology, University of Calcutta & Dr. Rajat Kanti Das, (Retd) Professor of Anthropology, Department of Anthropology. Vidyasagar University.
3. Workshop on the 'Contribution of Anthropologists in Social and Cultural Anthropology' on 18th & 19th February, 2020. The resource person was Dr. Tilak Bagchi, Former Assistant Keeper, Anthropological Survey of India, and Government of India.
4. 'A Special Lecture in Memory of Professor Biswanath Banerjee' on the 'Celebration of 100 Years of Teaching Anthropology in India' by the Indian Anthropological Society on 4th February, 2021. Lecture was delivered by Professor Sekh Rahim Mondal, Former Chair Professor of Anthropology and Sociology, Centre for Himalayan Studies, University of North Bengal & Former Professor, Department of Anthropology, and University of North Bengal.
