Vision of the department :
The Department of English began its journey with the vision of enabling local, rural students with the power of a language that dominates the world. The teachers strove to place the students in the International arena of foreign language.
Mission of the department :
Looking at the eagerness of the students in taking up English as an Honours, Core subject, the Department made it, its mission to help the students get a footing in the world of foreign language. The imparting of literary knowledge has at its core the mission of empowering students with the weapon of an internationally acclaimed foreign language, to face the challenges of a world, lying outside their known purview.
History of the department :
Ramsaday College came into existence in 1946, the year preceding the Independence of India, and so did the Department of English in this college. English was taught at the I.A. and B.A. levels as a General subject only. In the year 2001, the study of English as an Honours subject, was sanctioned by the mother-body, the University of Calcutta. 40 students were allowed to take admission in the course in the session 2001-02. In the session 2006-07, on popular demand, the number of seats in the Honours course was increased from 40 to 50. At present, the number of seats in Honours is 136.
Speciality of the department :
The Department was introduced to fulfill a longstanding demand of the residents of the area. English is a subject which is a gateway to various opportunities in the fields of teaching. Today 21 years after its introduction, the faculty can proudly declare that many successful students of the department are working as teachers in different schools of the state. The department has tried, heart and soul, since its inception to inculcate knowledge of English in the students.
Seminar Organized :
Guest speakers from other reputed institutions are invited to address students. In the year 2019, Dr. Subhajit Sengupta (University of Burdwan) delivered a lecture on Shakespeare. Beside this, the department also organizes webinar on various contexts of English studies.
